5 and a half miles.
-
650ft of climb.
Allow a couple of hours. Start at Joe Brown's in the High Street. Walk 50m. in the direction of Snowdon, then turn left along a tarmac track that runs down to the bypass (Toilets). Cross the bypass to the children's playground. At the lake edge (rowing boat hire in summer) turn right, crossing a small stream. Follow the margin of the lake across fields to reach a bridge across the river that links Llyn Peris to Llyn Padarn. Cross this and follow the Lakeside railway to the car park (and North Wales Quarry Museum). Cross the line and take a quick look in the Vivian Quarry. When you come out of this turn right and walk along to the base of the restored Vivian incline. Continue in the same direction to join a track near the Quarry Hospital. Leave the track and pass either in front or behind the hospital. The path now climbs through deciduous woodland. Ignore all turnings. Shortly before the path begins to drop there is a splendid viewpoint.
Keeping on the main path, descend to reach a gate. Pass through and cross the stream on the bridge. Follow the track ahead, which after half a mile or so will bring you out onto the Fachwen road near a telephone box (a short footpath cuts off the last 50m. of the track). Follow the road downhill. A small car park in trees on the left is opposite Lion Rock, a popular climbing location for groups of beginners. Upon reaching the end of the lake cross the bridge (classic view of Llyn Padarn and Snowdon) and keep left along the margin of the lake. Climb over a stile and follow the disused road for about 500m. to another stile. Cross this onto the pavement beside the main road. Ahead for about 150m. before a gap in the wall allows you to get down on to the old railway bed. This, running beside the lake, gives pleasant flat walking back to the outskirts of the village. Where it ends, at “The Lagoons” follow the road to the by-pass. Left takes you to the free car-park at the lakeside, and shortly beyond to the park and playground. Or go right for a few yards then cross the road to reach the end Llanberis High Street.
