Half ropes must be used in a pair, together they provide the strength to hold a fall. Most longer and mountainous traditional routes are easier to protect with half ropes as the runners and route are often not a straight line. Clipping one rope to runners on right hand side and one to the left helps reduce rope drag and helps protect the second on traverses etc.
Double ropes also have the advantage over single ropes when abseiling (something much more likely to do on more adventurous cliffs), they enable you to make full length rappels by tying both ropes together at one end. This is vital in winter mountaineering and alpinism.
A third bonus to climbing on double ropes is their backup ability in case rockfall or a climber fall causes one rope to be chopped.
Despite these clear advantages, the downsides are the added weight/bulk and more complicated rope-management needed.
