Crampons can be used simply to prevent a slip on an icy path, for upward progress on vertical ice, or to get you to the summit in the Alps.

A step down from walking crampons are spikes, microspikes, or pavement crampons. These do have uses in the hills - if it's frozen but only a thin layer of ice over rocks on a path, or for emergency use in the winter months where ice isn't expected for much of the walk. Fell runners might also want a pair to get them over some harder ground when running in the snow.

There are a number of different bindings available, each one suited to a particuar stiffness or type of boot. Be sure to select the correct binding for your boots and activity.

Just as important is to select the correct crampon, with the right number, angles, distribution, and shapes of points. Ice climbers want very sharp vertical points to better penetrate hard ice, walkers want less and shorter points to prevent tripping, and mountaineers want something in between.
