    A bit about us

Purveyors of the very finest climbing equipment for 50 years.

Joe Brown is considered the foremost rock climber and mountaineer of his generation, and perhaps the greatest all round mountaineer ever. You can read a biography of his climbing career if you click here.

In 1966 Joe opened the Llanberis climbing shop with his wife Val. The Capel Curig shop opened a couple of years later and over the years the shops have earned the reputation of being among the best specialist climbing equipment and outdoor gear shops in the UK.

As an independent mountaineering, climbing equipment and outdoor business we focus on providing honest and personal advice, as well as great ranges of mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, walking, hiking, expedition and alpine climbing equipment.

So if you find yourselves visiting Snowdonia, which we hope you will, please pop in and see us at one of our locations in Llanberis or Capel Curig. You will be sure to find an Alladin's cave of technical gear and equipment from all the major quality specialist outdoor brands. Or if at home or work then enjoy browsing or shopping on our web site.

Most of all though enjoy your time outdoors whatever your pastime, have fun and be safe!

Joe Browns' 50th Anniversary 'Name that shaft!' Competition

    Axe silhouette logo

    Name that shaft!

Want to own a limited edition Grivel ice axe just like the one we presented Val & Joe Brown with to celebrate 50 years of the Joe Brown Shops? Well, you can’t because theirs is unique BUT you can win a beautiful boxed, limited edition, anniversary axe that will impress any mountain history buff for years to come.

A mere 50 Grivel Monte Bianco replica axes have been created with our anniversary logo and one lucky winner could have their very own individually numbered axe to hang proudly on their wall. Or better still – get out and use it in the hills, possibly Kanchenjunga itself. Grivel have used only the very best materials to make this axe and where a material didn’t exist – they invented it! The shaft is actually a carbon wood composite combining the beauty and warmth of wood with the strength of carbon; hence the B rating. Grivel were one of the key sponsors of Joe Browns’ successful expedition to Kanchenjunga in 1955, at the time the highest mountain ever climbed by a Briton and Joe is remembered fondly by the Grivel family in Courmayeur. The Kanchenjunga expedition features as a key point in the companies’ timeline of equipment development so we are delighted to be able to offer a prize that holds such a special significance.

The Joe Brown boffins have been gathering together a list of ten classic ice axes that have been key to the evolution of 18th century glacier travel into the crazy world of vertical ice that is the playground of modern climbers today. As you while away the winter evenings why not plunge your mental energy into the winter competition that everyone is torqueing about and see if you can match each ice axe silhouette to the list of names supplied. Just submit your answers via the UKC competition page by Thursday 5th January for an amazing opportunity to win one of these classic pieces of mountaineering history and we will pull out a random winner to be announced the following day.

So come on, swing into action, grab your mates, get pondering and name that shaft for a chance to win possibly THE most exciting Christmas present ever!
