  • Who are we?

    A bit about us

Purveyors of the very finest climbing equipment for 50 years.

Joe Brown is considered the foremost rock climber and mountaineer of his generation, and perhaps the greatest all round mountaineer ever. You can read a biography of his climbing career if you click here.

In 1966 Joe opened the Llanberis climbing shop with his wife Val. The Capel Curig shop opened a couple of years later and over the years the shops have earned the reputation of being among the best specialist climbing equipment and outdoor gear shops in the UK.

As an independent mountaineering, climbing equipment and outdoor business we focus on providing honest and personal advice, as well as great ranges of mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, walking, hiking, expedition and alpine climbing equipment.

So if you find yourselves visiting Snowdonia, which we hope you will, please pop in and see us at one of our locations in Llanberis or Capel Curig. You will be sure to find an Alladin's cave of technical gear and equipment from all the major quality specialist outdoor brands. Or if at home or work then enjoy browsing or shopping on our web site.

Most of all though enjoy your time outdoors whatever your pastime, have fun and be safe!

Staff from all four of the Joe Brown Shops and The Climbers Shops came together in Langdale this week to enjoy a training day with Arc’Teryx sponsored athlete Katie Whittaker and British Mountain Guide Adrian Nelhams.

The vagaries of the Lakeland April weather meant there was ample opportunity to look at layering appropriate clothing throughout the day alongside the more technical aspects of good rope work and belay practice, the merits of single and double rope techniques in trad climbing as well as taking coils while moving together on steep terrain. The whole team had a great time with everyone ascending the three star Raven Crag classic Middlefell Buttress at least once before heading down to the iconic Old Dungeon Ghyll pub for essential tea and cake.

Many thanks to Jim …….. and Katie Whittaker for organising the day as part of the Big Mountain Weekend event running out of Sticklebarn in Langdale this coming weekend in conjunction with the International School of Mountaineering.
